How to Pick the Right College (and Why a Coach Can Help)

October 09, 20252 min read

Introduction

Choosing a college is one of the biggest decisions in a student’s life. It’s exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming with so many options, requirements, and deadlines. The good news: with the right strategy—and sometimes the right guidance—you can make a choice that fits both your academic goals and your personal growth. I am a college professor that has worked with college, and high school students for the past 13 years. It is a great passion of mine to help young adults find the right choice for them!

1. Start With What Matters Most to You

grad, graduation, books, college

Before diving into rankings or prestige, think about your values and goals:

  • Academics: Does the school offer your intended major or flexibility if you’re undecided?

  • Campus life: Do you prefer a large university with endless activities or a smaller college with close-knit community?

  • Location: Do you want to stay close to home, or explore a new city/state/region?

  • Cost & aid: Be realistic about tuition, scholarships, and long-term financial goals.

2. Do Your Research (Beyond the Website)

research, search, website

College websites and brochures highlight the best parts, but you’ll get a clearer picture by:

  • Visiting campus or taking virtual tours

  • Talking with current students or alumni

  • Exploring student organizations and support services

  • Checking graduation rates, internships, and job placement statistics

3. Narrow Down and Compare

comparing

Make a shortlist of schools that fit your needs and compare side by side. Consider creating a spreadsheet to track application requirements, deadlines, and pros/cons of each option.

4. Why a Coach Can Help

coach help

Applying to college is more than filling out forms—it’s about strategy. A coach can:

  • Provide clarity: Help you sort through priorities and identify schools that match your goals.

  • Keep you organized: Ensure you never miss a deadline or requirement.

  • Strengthen applications: Offer feedback on essays, interviews, and resumes.

  • Reduce stress: Serve as a guide so students and families don’t feel lost in the process.

Think of a college coach like an athletic coach—they don’t do the work for you, but they train you to perform at your best.

Conclusion

Picking the right college isn’t about finding the “perfect” school—it’s about finding the right fit for you. With thoughtful research, clear priorities, and possibly the support of a knowledgeable coach, the process becomes less overwhelming and a lot more rewarding.
